Kubernetes

Kubernetes is often sold as a solution and delivered as a second job. We've spent a combined twenty-plus years running it, rescuing it, and — occasionally — talking teams out of it. The goal of this engagement is simple: make the cluster a thing your team uses, not a thing that uses your team.

We've seen the full arc. Early adopters wrestling with pre-1.0 quirks. The great CNCF land-grab. Platform teams drowning in Helm chart forks. Organizations that migrated to Kubernetes because a staff engineer read a blog post and now can't remember why their deploys take forty minutes. Every one of those scenarios has a path out — but the path depends on knowing which one you're actually in.

Most Kubernetes problems are not Kubernetes problems. They're platform problems, pipeline problems, or organizational problems that the cluster just happens to surface. An unreliable deploy process doesn't get better when you add more operators. A fragmented service ownership model doesn't get healthier when you add more namespaces. We focus on the underlying mechanics — ownership, feedback loops, paved roads — so the cluster stops being the place where unrelated problems go to become visible.

Developers should own their metrics and logging from day one. The teams that run Kubernetes well don't have a separate group of people reading the dashboards — the people shipping the service are the people who know what's healthy, what's anomalous, and what the graphs are supposed to look like at 3 a.m. When observability is an operator concern instead of a developer concern, every incident turns into a scavenger hunt: ops running around trying to reconstruct context that the service author already had in their head.

We help teams build that ownership in from the scaffold. Service templates that ship with metrics, structured logs, and traces wired up. Dashboards and alert rules that live next to the code they describe, not in a separate tool nobody on the team has permissions to edit. SLOs defined by the team that owns the service, not handed down from a central platform group that's guessing. The platform's job is to make the paved road obvious and cheap — not to run the road for you.

We're pragmatic about the tooling. Helm, Kustomize, raw manifests, Flux, Argo, Crossplane, the flavor-of-the-month GitOps operator — all of it has a place, and none of it has all the places. We'll recommend what actually fits your team size, your deploy cadence, and the platform you already have, not the stack that looks best in a conference talk.

And sometimes the right answer is less Kubernetes. Not every workload wants to be on a cluster. Batch jobs that run once a day, internal tools with three users, stateful systems your team has been running successfully on VMs for a decade — these don't always get better under orchestration. We'll tell you honestly when to scope the cluster down and use the right tool for the right job.
